Joseph C. Mello

Chief Operating Officer

Joseph C. Mello became our chief operating officer, HealthCare Partners, in January 2015 after two years as a private investor and consultant. From 2009 through 2012, he served as a consultant to DaVita. From 2000 to 2009, he served as DaVita’s chief operating officer. Prior to DaVita, Mr. Mello served in senior management roles at various large medical group management organizations including MedPartners and Caremark.

Chan Chuang, MD, FCCP, FACP

Chief Clinical Officer, HealthCare Partners

Chan Chuang, MD, was named chief clinical officer of HealthCare Partners, in June 2014.  In this role, he focuses on driving improved clinical outcomes for the patients and communities that HealthCare Partners serves across the nation.

Dr. Chuang joined HealthCare Partners in 2002, and has held several leadership positions within the company including lead hospitalist, associate regional medical director and most recently, corporate medical director.  He has also served as chief of the department of Medicine and a member of the Medical Executive Committee at Torrance Memorial Medical Center.

Dr. Chuang is board certified in internal medicine, critical care, and pulmonary disease. He earned his bachelor's degree from the University of California, Berkeley and his medical degree from the University of California, San Diego.  He completed his residency, chief residency and fellowship at Harbor UCLA Medical Center. Dr. Chuang is the recipient of several distinguished teaching awards, and holds a special interest in the care of patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) as well as population health.

Jim Rechtin joined DaVita in 2014 as senior vice president, corporate strategy, and is now president of HealthCare Partners’ California market.  

Prior to joining DaVita, Mr. Rechtin advised large health systems, physician groups and health insurers on a variety of strategic issues including market strategies, joint venture strategies and structure, strategic partnership formation, physician recruitment, clinical integration and population health management as a partner at Bain & Company.

Previously, Mr. Rechtin ran a not-for-profit health and human services clinic in Indianapolis. He also served in the Peace Corps for two and a half years directing a public health project as a volunteer in the Democratic Republic of Congo.  

Mr. Rechtin is a board member and a member of the executive committee at the Center for Health Care Strategies. He earned his MBA from Harvard University, and a bachelor’s degree in political science from DePauw University.

Pratibha Patel, MD

President Emeritus

Pratibha Patel, MD, served as president of HealthCare Partners’ California market Medical Group in from March 2014 until February 2016. Previously, she served as Executive Vice President of Operations.

Dr. Patel joined HealthCare Partners in 2005 as Regional Medical Director for the company's Long Beach region after merging Harriman Jones Medical Group—where she was the president and CEO for eight years—with HealthCare Partners.

Dr. Patel is active in a variety of professional and government organizations. She held a governor-appointed seat on the Advisory Board to the California Department of Managed Care from 2000 to 2004 and served as a board member for the California Association of Physician Groups (CAPG) from 2001 to 2004. Dr. Patel has also served on many hospital and health plan committees.

Dr. Patel earned her doctorate of medicine from the Medical College of Baroda in India and completed her postgraduate training in pediatrics at Johns Hopkins, continuing on to a Fellowship in infections disease at Buffalo Children’s Hospital in Buffalo, NY. Dr. Patel also holds a law degree from Western University School of Law and is licensed to practice law in California.
